I had been looking for a spiritual path for many years.  It seemed to me that we have too strong a desire for financial success and not enough focus on the spiritual and sacred elements in life.  I thought there must be a way to live deeper, more compassionate, and fulfilling lives.  I wanted something far more satisfying.  So I was open to looking at other cultures for my spiritual path.

At a Bodhi Meditation class, a Bodhi teacher advised us not to try to figure things out.  He said this will simply get in our way.  Still, some results from Bodhi Meditation practice are difficult to explain and I wanted to place them into a framework of understanding.  For example, we were advised that if we have difficulty doing something, we should ask the spiritual leader, Grandmaster JinBodhi for help.

When I attended a Thanksgiving family reunion near Lake Tahoe, my son took me on his favourite hike. The last time we did this steep, strenuous, high-altitude hike, I had to turn back.  This time, when I came to the same spot where I previously turned back, I was breathing hard.  I thought, “It’s cold.  I’m tired and out of breath.  This seems too much for me.”  Then I had this thought, “Maybe I could ask Master JinBodhi for help.” I said silently, “Master JinBodhi, would you give me the energy I need right now to make it up this mountain so I can complete this hike with my son?”  At that moment I felt a release of energy. My breathing levelled out and I felt relaxed. The cold temperature no longer bothered me. I continued on the hike.

After another mile, my son said, “Hey Dad, I’m really surprised. You seem to be making this hike with no trouble at all.  Remember last time you had to turn back?  You must be in really good shape.”  I didn’t tell him my secret weapon. We arrived at a beautiful alpine lake and shared a moment of connection. I very much appreciated Master JinBodhi’s help in making this hike possible.
